Where Does the Word “Bootlegger” Come From?

The word first appeared in the 1850s in Maine and of course it refers to smuggling liquor. But this seemed odd because Prohibition didn’t start until almost 70 years later. That is, except in Maine, the first dry state, where it became illegal to manufacture or consume liquor in 1851. Because Maine shares a border with Canada, the law was easily flouted. Ordinary folks wanting to smuggle liquor into the country could hide a couple bottles in their pants legs in Canada and walk into the United States.

On Saturday, November 16th Bootlegger 21 was honored to participate in the Dizzy Fizz holiday cocktail event. While we were busy shaking the wonderful ”Flapper” cocktail created by our friend, Fredo Ceraso of Loungerati, the crowd was served Bootlegger 21 New York Vodka on the rocks. In a room full of incredible mixologists, celebrity cocktail personalities and wonderful whiskeys, rums and other dark liquors, we simply wanted our clear spirit to be tasted. Thanks to Francine for helping me hold down the bar , the Dizzy Fizz for welcoming us and Socially Superlative for the kind words!

Bootlegger 21 NY Vodka: Product Review

The craft distillery movement largely starts with making a clear 80 proof alcohol product known as vodka. One of the the latest is packaged in a beautifully elegant bottle that belies the spirit within. Designed to hearken back to the days of prohibition, Bootlegger 21 is a 100% corn based vodka created at the Tuthilltown Distillery in upstate New York. Of course, vodka didn’t really make much of an impact on U.S. soil until after repeal, but that withstanding, it still a product for your bar well worth looking into.

Bootlegger 21 starts out with a pure and clean nose, giving off a slight scent of alcohol. There is an overall somewhat sweet aroma with hints of grain and mineral notes. The first taste is very smooth and rich. I immediately detected a fine distillate, which was no surprise considering it is distilled six times and then charcoal filtered. As the flavor opens up, there are shades of fresh rainwater with a slight salinity. The finish is dry with a warming and somewhat complex earthy quality.

Driving rain, wind and a Temperance Movement Preacher (Yes, the only “Dry” thing in NYC on Saturday) could not stop over 700 guests from stopping by our Bootlegger 21 launch party and An Homage to Harlem Glamour!

Once they fought their way past the “Dry Movement” protestors, Guests had the run of the four story Bootlegger SoHo Townhouse with incredible Bootlegger 21 cocktails from Fredo Ceraso (Loungerati), Payman Bahmani (Life’s a Cocktail!), Ivy Mix (LUPEC), Francine Cohen (Inside F&B), Miguel Aranda (Apoteke) and Model Bartenders. A beautiful mix of period soul food was crafted by Sonora Events to whet the appetite.

The soundtrack of the night was provided by the talented Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra and renowned chanteuse Queen Esther with piano-man Jesse Gelber. Gin Minski, the adorable flapper-tapper, and Roddy Caravella and the Club Revue rounded out the burlesque entertainment.
